5 Pilates Tips for Beginners

Going to your first Pilates class can be intimidating for most people. There’s a lot of new terminology, intricate moves to remember, and if your first class in on a Reformer, there’s this new strange-looking machine in front of you while you stand there completely clueless. However, you don’t have to lose hope yet! Read through these great Pilates tips for beginners and enjoy your first class!

1. Don’t push your body to hard

In gyms, you hear a lot of ‘No pain no gain.’ Well, that’s not the Pilates way. If you’re finding an exercise painful, you should stop! You can expect to experience discomfort and unfamiliar feelings as work your body in new ways, but listen to your body carefully and stop when you feel something isn’t right.

2. Personalize

While group classes are a great way to break the ice, booking a private session can benefit you tremendously if you’re a beginner. We run these classes so that we can learn more about you, and you can learn more about us and the way we work. Plus, it’s a great opportunity to explain the concerns you have and the goals you want to achieve through the power of Pilates.

3. Book Beginner’s only classes

This might seem obvious, but sometimes a studio doesn’t disclose the type of class they’re giving or that they are ‘All Levels’ classes. If in doubt, always confirm ahead of time so that you don’t end up taking a course or class you aren’t ready for. Booking a beginner’s only class will help you understand betterwhat’s going on, you won’t be so shy about, and it also reduces your chances of injury.

4. Don’t over think it

At first, it can be very stressful trying to retain all this new focus on breathing, alignment, movement, resistance, etc. Try not to worry about it too much! Everyone learns at their own place, so follow the class the best you can and focus on the basics. The rest comes naturally with practice! It’s easier to tackle one concern at a time and master it, than trying to excel at everything at once.

5. Stick with it

The most difficult part of Pilates is the beginning. Probably, because in Pilates you’re using muscles groups you never used before, but also, you are un-learning bad habits such as harsh movements and crunches. Be patient with yourself, and stick with it. Remember, in 30 sessions you will have a whole new body.
